Will CBD products be removed from sale after March 2021?

The answer is yes, so why are we not panicking at Canni Family HQ?

Our take on the recent FSA announcement regarding CBD products

Far from worrying, we are delighted that the FSA are regulating the CBD market to protect customers like yourselves, and reputable CBD suppliers.

The team at The Canni Family have watched this burgeoning market go from an unknown product when we opened our doors back in May 2018, to a worldwide phenomenon which is now well known.

We are delighted that people now know about CBD and that the stigma of cannabis products has reduced. However we are not so impressed with the growing number of ‘miracle cure’ claims and only in it for the money CBD charlatans that have popped up. But what we have been really shocked by is the growing number of companies that we considered to be reputable who have turned out to have no CBD in their products at all……frankly these cowboys have got to go!

So What is the future for the CBD market?

Since the FSA announcement last month that all CBD suppliers will need to meet new regulations which include applying for a 'Novel' foods license to sell their CBD products and that more rigorous testing and regulations will be required, we actually cheered in the office.

Why? because The Canni Family have already been through what is called the ’Novel’ food process back at the end of 2018, when the the FSA guidelines on CBD were changed and we are now one of the only companies in the UK that have been signed off by our council and the FSA as compliant in every respect.

We now advise other CBD suppliers and practitioners on this subject at conferences and have been invited to work with Mackrell Garrett and Turner, London based Cannabis Legal experts (yes these now exist) to help them understand the process we went through and how this will impact the industry moving forwards.

The headlines stating ‘CBD to be taken off the shelves by March 21’ were meant to be sensational so we wanted to give you some understanding of what we bel FSA announcement about CBD products we just wanted to assure you that this has come as a welcome development both to The Canni Family team and to all reputable CBD suppliers in the UK.

So what does this all mean for you as a customer and what is a 'Novel' food.....

All CBD providers will be given one year to gain a license from the FSA to sell reputable and tested products by March 2021. We have been aware of this situation for over a year and have personally dealt with the FSA on this matter and our supplier is already in the process of applying for this license. We welcome all regulation that will allow customers to make clear and simple purchase choices from reputable CBD brands. It will only make the market safer for customers. A novel food is something that has not been consumed in significant quantities before 1997 but to be clear this is a guideline not a point of law.

As a company we have been campaigning to be allowed to talk about possible interactions with medications however the MHRA and FSA have prohibited us from being able to mention anything on our website that suggests we sell a medical products, which we don't it is a food supplement. Our rule is that if you take a medication with a grapefruit warning consult your doctor before taking CBD and you shouldn't take these products whilst pregnant.

We have always tried to be honest and transparent with our customer, providing what we consider to be some of the highest quality best value CBD products currently available on the market, and we hope that this process will enable reputable suppliers to continue the work they are currently doing.
